Isabella Brant was the first wife of the Antwerp master Peter Paul Rubens, whom she married shortly after his return from Italy in 1609. Just before Anthony van Dyck, one-time protégé and frequent collaborator of Rubens, left Antwerp in October 1621 for his own extended stay in Italy, he apparently presented this portrait to his mentor.

This large panel painting by a follower of Robert Campin combines the new interest in nature of the fifteenth-century Netherlandish artists with a long tradition of symbolic religious painting. Commissioned for the Chapel of San José in Toledo by MartÃn RamÃrez, a namesake of the saint and donor of the chapel, Saint Martin and the Beggar was part of one of the artist’s most successful ensembles.
