How dangerous is digital media for democracy?

https://www.mpg.de/19475420/1108-bild-how-dangerous-is-digital-media-for-democracy-149835-x

One of the most contentious questions of our time is whether the rapid global uptake of digital media is contributing to a decline in democracy. While discussions on the risks of social media have recently received a great deal of media coverage, tech companies argue that findings are not conclusive. It would be mistaken to condemn social media in general. But they can certainly fuel polarization and populism—especially in established democracies. These are the findings of a team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, the Hertie School in Berlin, and the University of Bristol.

Transformative Life Decisions

Some decisions in life are so significant that they have a massive impact on the course of a person’s future. Whether it’s the decision to emigrate, quit a job, end a long-term relationship, or report a sexual assault, these choices are transformative. They shape personal identities and life trajectories in unpredictable and often irreversible ways. A new conceptual paper by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development offers a framework for understanding and studying these life-changing decisions.

How do people feel about AI replacing human jobs?

Fears about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace vary substantially across occupations and countries, researchers led by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development have found in a representative study. They examined public attitudes in 20 countries toward AI in six occupations, including doctors, judges, and journalists. The findings, published in American Psychologist, can help AI designers and policymakers anticipate how new AI developments will be received in different nations, and address fears in a principled yet culturally sensitive manner.

Die Ursprünge der internationalen Solidarität

https://www.mpg.de/18575012/urspruenge-internationale-solidaritaet

Critical ignoring as a core competence for digital citizens

https://www.mpg.de/19554217/new-digital-competencies-critical-ignoring

Low-quality and misleading information online can hijack people’s attention, often by evoking curiosity, outrage, or anger. Resisting certain types of information and actors online requires people to adopt new mental habits that help them avoid being tempted by attention-grabbing and potentially harmful content. Anastasia Kozyreva, Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, argues that digital information literacy must include the competence of critical ignoring—choosing what to ignore and where to invest one’s limited attentional capacities. Critical ignoring is not merely about a skill of not paying attention, but about mindful and healthy information habits in the digital world.

Online Misinformation

https://www.mpg.de/24132917/0205-bild-online-misinformation-149835-x1?c=12641463

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development have identified who is most susceptible to online misinformation and why. Their meta-analysis reveals surprising patterns on how demographic and psychological factors—including age, education, political identity, analytical thinking, and motivated reflection—affect people’s ability to assess the accuracy of information. For instance, individuals with higher levels of education are just as likely to fall for misinformation as those with a lower level of education. The work, published in the journal PNAS, provides important information for theory building and designing interventions.

The origins of international solidarity

https://www.mpg.de/18663009/the-origins-of-international-solidarity?c=12643140

Many people and organisations are currently showing solidarity with Ukraine. As such, they are unconsciously following in the footsteps of one of the initial moments of international solidarity from 200 years ago, when many people throughout Europe came out in solidarity with Greece, a small nation that was fighting for its right to self-determination. At the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Caroline Moine has been researching the history of this period.
