View of Dordrecht from the North by Jan van Goyen

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/157395-view-dordrecht-north

Billowing clouds sweep across the sky in Jan van Goyen’s engaging portrayal of the lively waterways near Dordrecht. While sailboats and dinghies filled with men and women come and go, the most active elements of the painting are the shifting patterns of light and shade passing over this watery domain.

The Boating Party by Mary Cassatt

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/46569-boating-party

This bold composition reveals the influence of the flat, patterned surfaces, simplified color, and unusual angles of Japanese prints, which enjoyed a huge vogue in Paris in the late 1800s. The dark figure of the man compresses the picture onto the flat plane of the canvas, and the horizon is pushed to the top, collapsing a sense of distance.
The corner of the boat’s sail, also painted pale green, is pulled taunt by the wind
