Lucretia by Rembrandt van Rijn

After learning the fundamentals of drawing and painting in his native Leiden, Rembrandt van Rijn went to Amsterdam in 1624 to study for six months with Pieter Lastman (1583–1633), a famous history painter. Upon completion of his training Rembrandt returned to Leiden.

Death and the Miser by Hieronymus Bosch

In this panel Bosch shows us the last moments in the life of a miser, just before his eternal fate is decided. A little monster peeping out from under the bed–curtains tempts the miser with a bag of gold, while an angel kneeling at the right encourages him to acknowledge the crucifix in the window.

Edward VI as a Child by Hans Holbein the Younger

After the Reformation had brought social and political upheaval to Germany, creating an unfavorable climate for artists, Holbein moved to England in 1526. He first painted for Sir Thomas More’s circle of high servants of the crown and then became painter to the King himself, Henry VIII.

Dom Flemons and Marc Chagall’s “Orphée� | National Gallery of Art

Orphée depicts many tragedies, but songwriter Dom Flemons finds the joy in it: it resolves in the beautiful scene of two lovers embracing. Flemons pairs it with the tranquil Blue Butterfly. The instrumental song helps the emotional weight sink in.
