Across Laikipia County in central Kenya, endangered species like the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and African wild dog, coexist alongside rapidly growing numbers of people and livestock. A study published this month reveals that whether wild herbivore species thrive or decline in Laikipia is linked mainly to the abundance of livestock in the region.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (SNZCBI) and National Head Start Association (NHSA) have announced today, March 31, a yearlong partnership to provide free nature- and conservation-based learning opportunities about SNZCBI animals to young children in Head Start programs across the country. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of SNZCBI’s giant panda conservation program in April, Head Start classrooms across the nation and the general public are invited to tune in to see and learn about giant pandas April 7 at 1 p.m. ET.

Smokey Bear Exhibit Opens at Smithsonian’s National Zoo | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

A new Smokey Bear outdoor exhibit opened May 23 inviting visitors to look back in time to the mid-20th century, when a black bear cub was rescued from a forest fire and placed under the Zoo’s care. Archival photographs and 14 colorful posters line the pathway in front of Smokey Bear’s former habitat.

Working Toward Swift Fox Reintroduction | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
