Study for "Swing Landscape" by Stuart Davis

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/166441-study-swing-landscape

This modest canvas is an impressive work in its own right as well as an important document of one of Stuart Davis’s greatest paintings, Swing Landscape (Indiana University Art Museum), a mural he painted for the Williamsburg Houses in Brooklyn, New York, in 1938. He submitted this one-quarter-scale study for the mural to the Works Progress Administration, which employed Davis and many other artists to decorate public buildings during the Depression.

The Fire Boss by George Luks

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/42925-fire-boss

Painted during a period of labor unrest in 1925, The Fire Boss was intended as a life-size personification of a profession rather than a portrait of a specific individual. Despite his downcast, bedraggled appearance, the miner exudes defiance and inner resolve.
