Alyssa Wetterau is a graduate student researcher at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival working with the Center for Conservation Genomics to apply genetic and genomic technologies to improve the survival of threatened amphibian species. She focuses on the intersection of host, pathogen and microbiome in amphibian chytrid fungal disease in eastern hellbender salamanders and Panamanian golden frogs. Wetterau’s projects include:

Dr. Neiffer has over 30 yrs experience in zoological medicine, working with both captive and free-ranging wildlife as well as aquatic species including fish and marine mammals. Dr. Neiffer’s professional interests and areas of expertise include in-situ related species and environmental health assessments, taking part in sustainable conservation projects/programs, One-health programs with a conservation component, disease transmission at the wildlife/human/livestock interface, developing anesthetic protocols, fish medicine, hoof-stock medicine, soft tissue surgery, and teaching.

Chris H. Fleming | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Chris Fleming is a physicist, mathematician, and statistician by training, and currently a fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s (SCBI) Conservation Ecology Center. Fleming focuses on developing complementary mathematical models, statistical analyses, and software packages for difficult to work with ecological data. Currently, his specific focus is addressing conservation related questions with animal tracking data, such as estimating how much space animals need.
