Amy Scarpignato is a research ecologist and bird conservation specialist at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s Migratory Bird Center, which is dedicated to understanding, conserving, and championing the grand phenomenon of bird migration. Scarpignato earned her bachelors of science in ecology and systematic biology from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo in 2003, and her masters of science in natural resources/wildlife biology studying the spatial ecology of common ravens from Humboldt State University in 2011.
Scarpignato grew up in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region.

Adrienne B. Mars | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Adrienne B. Mars of Jackson, Wyoming, has been involved with various environmental organizations, including the Smithsonian Institution. Since 1974, Mars has served on the Board of Trustees of her alma mater. She has been a part of the Board of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, and the Smithsonian’s National Board.
She is also involved with the Washington Opera’s Board.

Jenny Santiestevan | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Jenny Santiestevan is responsible for overseeing the care, preservation and management of biological frozen collections, mainly from threatened animal species, stored at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s biorepository in Front Royal, Virginia. Collections maintained in the facility are from other Smithsonian units as well as other institutions. Prior to her work with the Smithsonian, Santiestevan worked as a licensed veterinary technician for domestic animals and as a clinical laboratory technician and manager.

Erika Paulson is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival. Paulson’s research employs both embryo and cell culture techniques and molecular biology techniques for the study of preimplantation embryos and embryo implantation in mammals. She is particularly interested in the changes in gene expression and molecular events necessary for successful implantation of embryos in a receptive endometrium.
