Encouraging the transition to a Circular ICT sector in Malaysia | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/encouraging-the-transition-to-a-circular-ict-sector-in-malaysia/

This study aims to develop recommendations for improving the circularity of theInformation Communication Technology (ICT) value chain in Malaysia, as an example of how an emerging economy with a significant manufacturing base can react to global trends and future-proof its industry. The recommendations have been developed on the basis of an analysis of global trends in circular economy policy and practice combined with research into the current awareness and practice of the ICT sector in Malaysia. They include creating demand for circular products (through minimum standards as well as incentives to improve performance); improving waste management (by enhancing the capture of valuable resources from both national and global waste streams); and, increasing capacities within the Malaysian ICT manufacturing sector (through awareness raising, capacity building, as well as financial incentives).

Standard Operating Procedures for Environmentally Sound Management of Used Lead-acid Batteries | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/standard-operating-procedures-for-environmentally-sound-management-of-used-lead-acid-batteries/

This report entails Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for environmentally sound management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs). The SOPs consist of 37 sheets, each covering one topic relevant for safe and environmentally sound ULAB management, from collection to recycling. The SOPs sheets use a common format and are supported with pictures and diagrams illustrating good practices, contrasted by pictures of unacceptable practices. The sheets are aimed for: Operators of collection points, bulk transporters, and ULAB recyclers Regulators responsible for defining minimum requirements for environmentally sound ULAB management Inspectors responsible for assessing the environmental, health and safety (EHS) performance of operators in ULAB management A full and permanent implementation of all SOPs significantly increases the probability that ULABs are managed according to high EHS standards minimising the risk for environmental pollution and the development of workplace ill-health. The SOPs were developed for use in Ghana, but also with a view for a wider use and uptake.

Material choices for environment-friendly packaging design | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/material-choices-for-environment-friendly-packaging-design

There is a growing agreement on negative consequences of increasing single-use plastic and packaging waste to human health, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, climate change and biodi- versity. However, implementation of measures to tackle the problem vary considerably. The prevalent inconsistency in the measures to address the problem of single-use plastics and packaging waste is partly due to a lack of knowledge on environmental impacts and potentials of material choices for sustainable packaging designs and single-use plastic alternatives. Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology offers a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact of packaging materials, highlighting areas of urgent intervention, and showing potential conflict of interest between different environmental goals. This report is based on a literature review of several LCA studies conducted to analyze the environmental impact of different packaging materials and alternatives. The report focusses on five packaging applications: shopping bags, beverage containers, beverage cups, take-away food packaging and meat packaging.

Implementing circular economy in Mexico: Recommendations for strategies against obsolescence of smartphones & textiles | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/implementing-circular-economy-in-mexico-recommendations-for-strategies-against-obsolescence-of-smartphones-textiles/

The aim of this document is to draw attention to necessary reforms of the legal and economic framework in the area of „circular economy“, waste prevention and product obsolescence. In addition, the potential of the circular economy for climate change mitigation will be highlighted. Therefore, approaches for extending the usage time and lifespan for products are shown using the example of smartphones and textiles. Globally existing measures from the area of policy and legislation as well as suitable business models are presented and barriers and drivers for dissemination of the selected models are identified. Life cycle assessment studies will be used to estimate the greenhouse gas saving potential for Mexico that results from extending the usage times of smartphones and textiles. Finally, the results will be used to formulate recommendations for implementing the circular economy aspects of waste prevention and lifespan extension in Mexican waste and product policies.

Advancing Responsible Sourcing in Mineral Value Chains | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/advancing-responsible-sourcing-in-mineral-value-chains/

This book examines the responsible sourcing of raw materials within global value chains. With the need for a vast amount of additional raw materials to enable the global green energy transition, it examines the current responsible sourcing landscape, with the aim of bringing clarity and harmony to theories and practices that are characterized by systemic fragmentation. Normative elements are introduced to create a framework for a functioning responsible sourcing system built around the behavioural change of supply chain actors. Drawing from state of the art conceptual ideas and practical experience, an impactful and economically viable approach to the responsible sourcing of raw material is presented.

Developments in society and implications for emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/developments-in-society-and-implications-for-emerging-pollutants-in-the-aquatic-environment/

Pollutant emissions in river basins change continuously. Management strategies should address such developments. Many scenarios are published which describe future changes in the environment and in society. Examples concern climate change, demographic change and urbanization. Based on these scenarios, specific trends can already be predicted (with uncertainties). Do these scenarios help to get a picture on future pollutants? The study presented here is based on the hypothesis that existing scenarios on developments in society may provide useful indications for future pollutants. The analysis of more than 30 reports on future scenarios shows that some developments are directly connected to consumption and the emission of specific substances. Secondly, it became evident that the effects of other development scenarios, such as those associated with climate change, are more complex. A precise quantitative evaluation of the implications of some scenarios on future pollutants can be particularly difficult for such scenarios. An important field of changes is technological developments. Frequently observed changes in this respect are substitutions of problematic substances with substances of similar structure.

Effects and success factors of sustainable consumption policy instruments: a comparative assessment across Europe | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/effects-and-success-factors-of-sustainable-consumption-policy-instruments-a-comparative-assessment-across-europe/

Important knowledge gaps exist regarding the effects of policy instruments for sustainable consumption (SC) and success factors of such instruments. This article compares and summarizes the results of six case studies on the effects and success factors of SC instruments in the need areas of housing and food. While analysing different instrument types from four different European countries, all case studies were guided by the same analytical framework and mixed-methods approach. This synthesis article particularly emphasizes factors fostering the generation of instrument effects (outcomes and impacts) or hampering the creation of such effects, respectively. These factors include instrument goals and design, the accommodation of consumer needs, and the simultaneous addressing of framework conditions, as well as market context, policy interaction, and stakeholder involvement. The findings and conclusions can contribute to a better understanding of the conditions under which policy instruments can steer consumer behaviour towards sustainability.
