https://www.oeko.de/publikation/why-are-biobased-and-biodegradable-plastic-not-part-of-the-solution-to-reduce-plastic-waste/

This report has been prepared to provide simple assistance to CAP SEA partner organisations in their work. Science-based background knowledge on biobased and biodegradable plastic shall enable the partners to avoid regrettable substitution of single-use products. For instance, replacement of single-use plastic items with biobased or biodegradable variations should be avoided. This paper aims to raise awareness for the need to consider the trade-offs in this context. Furthermore, it is to anticipate consequences of material decisions in terms of environmental impacts and end-of-life treatment.

Influence of the service life of products in terms of their environmental impact: Establishing an information base and developing strategies against "obsolescence" | oeko.de

https://www.oeko.de/publikation/influence-of-the-service-life-of-products-in-terms-of-their-environmental-impact-establishing-an-information-base-and-developing-strategies-against-obsolescence/

The aim of the study is to create a sound data basis for describing and assessing the phenomenon of obsolescence and the trends in achieved product lifespan and service life and, based on this, to develop strategies against obsolescence. The results show that electrical and electronic equipment is being replaced for many reasons. Material, functional, psychological and economic forms of obsolescence interact and create a highly complex pattern. Even the causes of material obsolescence are usually very diverse and do not allow an overarching conclusion. The analysis also confirms that the first useful service-life of most of the product groups investigated has decreased in recent years.

For approx. ten years (voluntary) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities have become increasingly important throughout the EU. It is often assumed that the CSR activities of companies have positive effects on the economy, society and the environment. Up to now the empirical evidence, tools and methods have been lacking to enable assessment of the impact of voluntary CSR activities. That is, the measures which companies undertake to be more sustainable that go beyond the legal requirements. This was a key goal of the IMPACT project funded by the European Commission. The project examined what contribution the voluntary CSR measures of companies makes to a more sustainable society.

The Comparative Evaluations of Innovative Solutions in European Fisheries Management (CEVIS) Project (2006 – 2009) was an exploration of how science can aid policy decisions. CEVIS teamed up biologists, economists, and other social scientists to evaluate four fisheries management innovations being considered for Europe: participatory approaches; rights-based regimes; effort control; and decision-rule systems. Comparative Evaluations of Innovative Fisheries Management brings the CEVIS project full circle by providing further insights into the role of science in policy.
