I met Sayan 11 years ago when I first came to Duke, at a seedy beer bar in Durham called „Sam’s Quik Shop“, which no longer exists. I had no idea who he was other than a sweet, very smart, very funny and incredibly human person. I could tell he was a special person however because he was always challenging my preconceptions with his typical good humor. For someone of his intellect and accomplishments it is extraordinarily unusual to retain such a humble, regular-person veneer, which I knew was genuine. He talked often, and with a huge smile of his wife and their (at the time) newly born child.I lost touch with Sayan after a few years, but I was incredibly saddened to hear the news of his passing at such a young age. He has made a huge difference in the scientific world, but he also touched the lives of many, like me, for the better.

On behalf of the Team of the Humboldt Science Center for Child Development at Leipzig University (HumanKind), I wish to express our deepest condolences to Professor Mukherjee’s family, colleagues, and friends. Professor Mukherjee and his team at the ScaDS.AI were collaborating with the HumanKind Team on two research projects over the past two years, and we were all intellectually and personally transformed by this experience. We are all deeply grateful for having had the privilege to learn from and engage with Professor Mukherjee’s ingenious mind and kind heart. His ability to see beyond the visible and help others move beyond the known was inspiring and unique, and his warmth and ability to take perspectives beyond disciplines were boundless. Sayan’s death leaves me speechless. I knew him as a brilliant colleague and a warm-hearted person. As he couldn’t remember my “difficult German name”, he called me Martin, in reference to the only theologian he knew (apart from me). In return, I was allowed to call him “Al” (after the song). Al, Sayan, I will miss you.

I’m pretty saddened and stunned by Sayan’s sudden passing. We graduated roughly the same time and were academic peers and colleagues throughout the years. We’ve had numerous research exchanges, and I had the pleasure of inviting him to give a couple of talks in Colorado in 2019. In this era where it has been constantly disruptive as to the place and meaning of academia, Sayan was an old-school academic in all the good ways. Super brilliant, kind and hilarious – he will be greatly missed.

His loss is beyond my capacity to absorb, let alone express in writing. His laughter has left our corridors forever, and his words, full of energy from the depth of his heart, will no longer be a comfort in our busy days.
