The ECDVU grew out of a series of ECD training seminars (Summer Institutes) initiated by UNICEF in 1994/95. ECDVU is an innovative approach to addressing ECD capacity building and leadership development in the Middle East and North Africa. It is a unique training that uses face-to-face and distributed learning methods including: residential seminars, web-based instruction, CD-Rom and print material support, video-conferencing, and a ‚community of learners‘ strategy within and among cohort countries. Founded in 1951, AMIDEAST in its early years focused on promoting U.S. study to students in the MENA region and managing U.S. scholarships and exchanges such as the flagship Fulbright Foreign Student Program. Today AMIDEAST programs and services affect half a million individuals a year – improving educational opportunities and quality, strengthening local institutions, and developing language and professional skills critical for success in the global economy.

Dieser Bericht wird von der International Labour Organization (ILO) veröffentlicht. Er bietet einen vergleichenden Überblick über die Arbeitsmarktsituation und -chancen von Jugendlichen weltweit. Es geht dabei vor allem um Gründe für Jugendarbeitslosigkeit und Armut junger Menschen trotz Lohnarbeit. Eines der Hauptergebnisse ist, dass der weltweite Mangel an anständigen Arbeitsmöglichkeiten für junge Leute dazu geführt hat, dass gegenwärtig ein Drittel der jungen Menschen entweder Arbeit suchen, aber keine finden, die Arbeitssuche aufgegeben haben oder arbeiten, aber nichts destoweniger unter der Armutsgrenze von 2 US-Dollar pro Tag leben. Hierdurch wird ein Teufelskreis aus unzureichender Ausbildung, unproduktiver Arbeit und „working poverty“ von Generation zu Generation aufrechterhalten.

This report is published by the International Labour Organization (ILO). It offers a comparative overview on the labour market situation for young people worldwide. The focus is to detect reasons for youth unemployment and youth poverty inspite of work. One of the principal findings is that a global deficit of decent work opportunities has resulted in a situation in which one out of every three youth in the world is either seeking but unable to find work, has given up the job search entirely or is working but still living below the US$2 a day poverty line. Without the right foothold from which to start out right in the labour market, young people are less able to make choices that will improve their own job prospects and those of their future dependents. This, in turn, perpetuates the cycle of insufficient education, low-productivity employment and working poverty from one generation to the next. The report, therefore, adds urgency to the UN call for development of strategies aimed to give young people a chance to make the most of their productive potential through decent employment. This report provides empirical research as well as quantitative assessments of the realities of youth labour markets to build an analytical starting block from which countries can identify the main challenges facing youth for the process of designing the policies most suited to their particular situations.
