The Thinker (Le Penseur) by Auguste Rodin

The Thinker was originally conceived not in heroic isolation, but as part of Rodin’s monumental Gates of Hell —a pair of bronze doors intended for a museum of decorative arts in Paris. Although the doors were never cast during the sculptor’s lifetime, they nevertheless provided Rodin a rich source of ideas for individual figures and groups that he worked and reworked for the rest of his career.

The Gallery opened in 1941 with only about 30 sculptures. Yet the names of three great Renaissance artists appeared among them: Mino da Fiesole, Desiderio da Settignano, and Verrocchio. These were the seeds of what grew to become one of the finest collections of Italian Renaissance sculpture in the United States.

Influenced by Paul Cézanne and by the classical period of Pablo Picasso , Walt Kuhn sought to perfect his draftsmanship through rigorous drawing exercises during the mid-1930s. He developed a monumental style that emphasized mass, volume, and economy of form.
