A close friend of Whistler, George Washington Vanderbilt II commissioned this full-length portrait in 1897 to hang in Biltmore House, his enormous château on 125,000 acres of wilderness near Asheville, North Carolina. The artist quickly responded, „I could not ask for a more sympathetic subject than yourself and therefore am greatly pleased at the prospect of painting your portrait!“

This portrait by Cecilia Beaux portrays the artist’s cousin, Sarah Allibone Leavitt, dressed in white with her black cat on her shoulder. Beaux was recognized not only for her bold painting technique, but also for her ability to imbue her female subjects with wit and intelligence, rendering them more than just mere objects of beauty.

Unlike some of his contemporaries, John Frederick Kensett felt no need to travel to the tropics or the American West to find compelling subjects to paint. Instead, he continually revisited several familiar locales in New York and New England where he could explore the ways in which the same motif was altered by subtle differences in light and atmosphere.
