Probably purchased at Drouot-Richlieu in Paris, 1920s; thereafter by descent to Martine Vedrinelle, Saint Aygulf, France. Mme. Vedrinelle sold the piece at auction at Tajan in February 8, 2008 (lot 135), where it was purchased by Didier Wormser of L’Etoile d’Ishtar, Paris, from whom the Museum purchased the work

Though it has lost its lid, this large ewer’s (gong) elaborately decorated surface is teeming with fantastic animals. The vessel is in the form of a horned bird with a hooked beak, whose wings, composed of coiled dragons, extend on either side of the vessel body
