Among his many exhibits at the Paris Salon of 1763, Greuze showed a head of a boy and two heads of girls; all were the same relatively small size of the present picture but no two were identified as a pair

This imposing picture, one of Fei’s most accomplished, is completely intact, with its original engaged frame richly decorated with gilded pastiglia and small cabochon stones alternating with medallions of verre églomisé (see Eisler 1961 for a discussion of this technique)

This diptych is composed of a pair of thick ivory panels. Two modern hinges hold the panels together, allowing them to fold closed like a book and lock by means of a hook and eye latch on their outer rims
