Greuze was of modest birth, the son of a roofer. He received his early training in Lyons and in Paris studied drawing with Charles Joseph Natoire. In 1755, after he was accepted as a candidate member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in the category of genre painter, Greuze presented five works for exhibition at the Salon

JugMade from transparent yellowish colorless glass, this jug has a rounded body narrowed at the base of the neck and a flared opening. It stands on a low foot ring with a pontil mark at the base, and a handle with a thumb rest is attached at the rim and body

This sculpture is carved out of a single slab of ivory and represents the seated Mary holding the infant Jesus (mostly missing) in her lap. Mary’s face is moon-shaped, with a high, wide forehead, a pointed chin, and almond-shaped eyes
