Robert Henri was born Robert Henry Cozad in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 24, 1865, the son of a professional gambler and real estate developer. The family lived in Nebraska and Colorado, but fled east when the father shot and killed a rancher over a land dispute and was indicted for manslaughter.

Vase, called „The Flame“ by Chinese Qing Dynasty

Named „The Flame“ by an unknown connoisseur, this porcelain vase has a simple but elegant form that highlights the jewellike red glaze as it moves over the contours. Such deep red monochrome ware, known as langyao in China and as oxblood or sang-de-boeuf in the West, is most prized when the surface sparkles with a rich variety of reds enhanced by tiny bubbles and a fine overall crackle, as in this example.

Auto Tower, Industrial Forms (part B) by John Storrs

A pioneering figure in the development of American modernist sculpture, John Storrs incorporated the lessons of cubism and futurism and the streamlined design elements of industrialism to create some of the first abstract sculptures in the United States. Storrs was born in Chicago in 1885 and studied art in Hamburg, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and Paris, under such noted sculptors as Arthur Bock and Auguste Rodin.
