A folding ceramic

A self-assembled paper made of conductive nanofibres of the ceramic vanadium pentoxide is tough, elastic and electrically conductive. A team including Z. Burghard and J. Bill from Stuttgart University and scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research mimicked the self-assembling nanostructure of mother-of-pearl in the solid ceramic composite made of vanadium oxide and water.
The material is so elastic and tough that it can be bent (right-hand image).

Feelings: a robot with a gentle touch

In order to support people in therapy or in everyday life in the future, machines will need to be able to feel their world and to be capable of gently touching their human counterparts. Katherine J. Kuchenbecker and her team at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart are currently developing the technology required for this objective and are already testing sensitive robots for initial applications.
