Daniela Chavez is a postdoctoral Research Associate at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo where she studies domestic cat egg cells to improve artificial reproduction for endangered felids and other mammals including humans.  This research is important for conservation of critically endangered big cats that struggle to reproduce naturally and maintain healthy population sizes and a diverse gene pool.

Qiongyu Huang is the Roger and Molly Sit Giant Panda Biologist at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Conservation Biology Institute’s Conservation Ecology Center. He is a physical geographer specializing in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial analysis. His research focuses on developing solutions for complex conservation challenges by focusing on landscape- and continental-scale wildlife-habitat dynamics and large scale environmental datasets. Huang leverages satellite remote sensing data and innovative species distribution modeling in his research.

Our Sumatran tiger cubs just turned four months old! Bandar and Sukacita quickly took to their yard. In fact, the first day we opened the door, both cubs fearlessly bolted out—climbing, hiding in the bamboo, and trying to sneak up on mom Damai (and each other)! They’re great fun to watch.
