Erika Paulson is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival. Paulson’s research employs both embryo and cell culture techniques and molecular biology techniques for the study of preimplantation embryos and embryo implantation in mammals. She is particularly interested in the changes in gene expression and molecular events necessary for successful implantation of embryos in a receptive endometrium.

Jonathan D. Ballou | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Jonathan Ballou was the population manager and a research scientist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C. His research focused on the genetic and demographic problems confronted by small populations, especially of threatened species. He is recognized as a leader in developing the theoretical basis for the genetic management of small populations and in developing population management tools (software, applied theory) that are widely and internationally used by wildlife and zoo managers.

Twin Fishing Cats Born At The National Zoo: A First May 17, 2013 | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Just before midnight on May 17, the mewling of a newborn kitten delighted keepers at the National Zoo’s Asia Trail. The kitten’s mother, Electra, had two kittens last year on May 18 (see below for more information on last year’s births).
