Ein internationales Team von Forscherinnen und Forschern konnte in einer neuen Studie zeigen, wie Ipecacuanha-Alkaloide, Substanzen, die in der traditionellen Medizin Verwendung finden, gebildet werden. Dabei verglichen sie zwei weit entfernte Pflanzenarten und konnten zeigen, dass beide Pflanzenarten zwar einen vergleichbaren chemischen Ansatz nutzen, sich aber die Enzyme, die sie für die Synthese brauchen, unterscheiden und auch ein anderer Ausgangsstoff Verwendung findet. Weitere Untersuchungen ergaben, dass sich die Biosynthesewege dieser komplexen chemischen Verbindungen in den beiden Arten unabhängig voneinander entwickelt haben.
