Eine neue Art, Babysterne zu füttern

https://www.mpg.de/18064623/mpe_jb_2021?c=2191

Supermassive black hole hiding behind a ring of dust

Using the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), an international team of astronomers has unveiled this supermassive gravity trap. The researchers, including scientists from the Max Planck Institutes for Astronomy and Radio Astronomy, gained new insights into the mechanisms of active galactic nuclei, some of the brightest and most enigmatic objects in the universe. They also confirmed a 30-year-old theory.
The central black holes are fed by large amounts of cosmic dust and gas.

The curse of durability

Plastic is an indispensable part of everyday life. Bottles, bags, packaging and technical molded parts made of plastic are lightweight and resistant to water and decay. While such qualities are highly valued during usage, it is a different story when it comes to depositing plastic refuse in the environment. Here, the blessing of durability becomes the curse of imperishability.

The Covews algorithm supports Covid-19 mortality forecasts

The Covews algorithm, developed by a team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, uses machine learning methods to calculate mortality forecasts for people with Covid 19, for example. The artificial intelligence could thus help to better treat people infected with Corona.
They fed the algorithm information about how several routinely collected patient
