The Coronation of the Virgin by Master of the Washington Coronation

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/41702-coronation-virgin

This Coronation of the Virgin may be the first time the subject, which originated in the West, appears in Venetian art. Some of the earliest representations were carved above cathedral doorways in France—and certain elements in the Gallery’s painting—its elaborate halos, for example—share in the decorative elegance of Gothic art.

Saint Simon by Simone Martini

Simon “the Zealot is one of Jesus’s apostles in the first three Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), but otherwise Simon is an elusive figure. Legend says that he was martyred by being sawn apart, but there is no saw to indicate his martyrdom in this half-length portrait.

Cardinal Pietro Bembo by Titian

https://www.nga.gov/artworks/41638-cardinal-pietro-bembo

Pietro Bembo (1470–1547) wears the red biretta and cape of a cardinal. At the time Titian painted this portrait, Bembo had recently been elevated to that status in honor of his service to the Church and his scholarly career, although the writer’s literary output was almost entirely secular.
