I am sad for our collective loss of a great scientist, collaborator, and friend. I feel lucky to have been able to interact with Sayan in all of these ways. Sayan always provided me energy and encouragement in times of my own doubt and for this I will miss him immensely. May he, his family, and his friends find peace in time.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Sayan. He was a brilliant mathematician/statistician and valued collaborator. I truly enjoyed discussions with him about novel approaches to challenging problems in the biomedical sciences. He was a teacher who encouraged, inspired and guided many students. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and collaborators.

I am very sorry to hear the sad news of Prof. Mukherjee’s death. He visited UC Davis on a few occasions notably for a special lecture series in 2016, and he was well liked among members of our department, and he was always very helpful and friendly in our communications with him over the years. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues.

I am deeply shocked. It will take time for me and others to realize how much we lost. Sayan was a great colleague with inspiring ideas. I admired his logical rigor as well as his will to develop new directions outside known paths. He brought together fields like topology, statistics, and data mining, and he did so with a depth that I might never reach. Besides his excellence, he was always kind and fun to talk to. We had only a few nice evenings together, but I will miss him as colleague and friend.

Ich bin tief getroffen. Der Tod Sayan Mukherjees ist ein großer menschlicher und wissenschaftlicher Verlust. Er hinterlässt eine immense Lücke, er wird unserem Institut für Informatik ebenso fehlen wie unserem Interdisziplinären Zentrum für Bioinformatik und dem nationalen Kompetenzzentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig. Mit seiner herausragenden Expertise wollte der Mathematiker, Statistiker und Informatiker durch die Auswertung biologischer Daten neue Wege in der Präzisionsmedizin eröffnen. Der Standort Leipzig passte perfekt zu ihm. Mein herzliches Beileid gilt allen Familienangehörigen Mukherjees sowie seinen Kolleginnen und Kollegen.

It is a profound personal loss and a great loss for the entire scientific community. I last met Sayan in the summer of 2024, when I was giving a lecture at SIADS.AI in Leipzig. We spent evening discussing ways to advance the field of topological data analysis—both from theoretical and applied, software driven perspectives.Most notably, we explored possibilities for fostering more frequent collaboration between our groups, as well as with other researchers in Germany and Poland. This conversation was so characteristic of Sayan—full of ideas, energy, and genuine passion for bringing people together and pushing the boundaries of knowledge. I will deeply miss him, and I will always remember him.

It is with shock and sadness I heard the news today. Sayan was one of the pillars supporting my entire research field, and a great contributor both in research and in shaping one of the friendliest research areas I have met. He shone brightly, as a mentor, as a leader, as a teacher, and as a collaborator: one of the recent contributions I am most proud to have produced was in collaboration with Sayan, and the collaboration was fruitful and enriching in many ways. I will miss him.

I am very sorry to hear his sudden and unexpected passing. Sayan was a fantastic mathematician/statistician with deep geometric insight. People here at UC Davis invited him at least twice, one in 2016 and the other in 2018, for his lectures and talks, which my students and I enjoyed very much. In addition, he and I were directors of the NSF-TRIPODS institutes at our respective places (Duke and UC Davis), and discussed many issues. Last year, I bumped into him in a conference, and he strongly suggested that I should visit him in Leipzig. I wish I could visit him, but it was not materialized. He was a very friendly and warm person. I miss him dearly. To his family and loved ones, please accept my sincere condolences.

Mit großer Bestürzung vernahm ich die traurige Nachricht über den Tod von Sayan Mukherjee, einer so engagierten und lebensfrohen Person. Leider hatte ich nur wenig Gelegenheit mit ihm zu sprechen, aber in diesen Situationen glänzte seine Aufgeschlossenheit und nahbare Art. Der Verlust wiegt schwer und ich drücke den Angehörigen mein Beileid aus.
