Order in the chaos of a cell membrane

https://www.mpg.de/6982955/membrane_glycolipid_rafts

In a membrane model, glycosylphosphatidylinositols, which belong to the glycolipids consisting of sugar and lipid, order themselves into rafts and form a crystalline structure. The insights gained by P. Seeberger and C. Stefaniu at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces about the formation of domains in the cell membrane are important for glycobiology, as errors in this process can trigger diseases like PNH and BSE.

Zooming in on the Black Hole

https://www.mpg.de/7426897/dust-fountain-black-hole

Gathering the most detailed observations ever into the surroundings of the supermassive black hole at the centre of an active galaxy, astronomers made a surprising discovery: dust is being propelled into space in a ring-shaped disk. It is probably being pushed outwards by the intense radiation released by the black hole and its hot surroundings. Researchers at the Max Planck Institutes for Radio Astronomy in Bonn and Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching were significantly involved in the study.
