Betelgeuse – a giant with blemishes

Betelgeuse, the bright star in the constellation of Orion, has been fascinating astronomers in the recent months because of its unusually strong decline in brightness. Scientists have been discussing a number of scenarios trying to explain its behaviour. Now a team led by Thavisha Dharmawardena of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy have shown that most likely unusually large star spots on the surface of Betelgeuse have caused the dimming.
“Towards the end of their lives, stars become red giants,” Dharmawardena explains

Peering inside the birthplaces of planets orbiting the smallest stars

Scientists have been finding ring-like structures indicating planet formation in the disks surrounding young Sun-like stars for several years. Astronomers led by Nicolas Kurtovic from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, have now detected similar signal in disks of young very low-mass stars that are considerably smaller and less massive than their counterparts. Although these stars represent the vast majority of the stellar population, they only host 10% of the known exoplanets to date, including terrestrial and Jupiter-like planets. While theorists have yet to derive a satisfying model that explains the formation of such giant planets inside the rather low-mass disks of the smallest stars, the new results are the beginning of a systematic investigation to solving this mystery.

The Max Planck Institute for Physics commemorates its 100th anniversary. On October 1, 1917, the former Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics started operations with Albert Einstein as director. The MPI for Physics is celebrating its jubilee with a scientific symposium that will take place from October 10 to 12, 2017. The celebrations to mark the Institute’s centenary will draw to a close with a ceremony and evening festivities.
An evening program with physics cabaret and live music rounded off the festivities
