Working With Communities to Return Swift Fox to the Prairie | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation/great-plains-science/restoring-swift-fox-prairie

Smithsonian’s Great Plains Science Program has partnered with Aaniiih and Nakoda Tribes of Fort Belknap Indian Community in northern Montana, in an effort to reintroduce the Nóouhàh-Toka’na, or swift fox.  Conservation efforts have brought swift foxes back to 40% of their original range, but a 186-mile (300 kilometer) gap across their range in Montana threatens their survival.

Paige Byerly is a postdoctoral researcher at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Conservation Genomics. Her research focuses on avian evolution, population dynamics, and conservation. Her primary areas of expertise include museum genomics, population genomics, and Caribbean seabird ecology. Her current research at SCBI is a joint project with Dr. Philip Lavretsky’s lab at the University of Texas El Paso, investigating the genomic consequences of domestic and wild mallard interbreeding on wild mallards. She is also partnering with U.S.

Jonathon J. Valente | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

https://nationalzoo.si.edu/about/staff/jonathon-j-valente

Jonathon Valente is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. He is interested in how landscape composition and patterns influence avian habitat selection, movement, behavior and population dynamics. Because he has a background in both ecology and statistics, Valente is also interested in understanding how variability in statistical or biological assumptions can impact the outcome of population modeling approaches.
