This diptych is composed of a pair of thick ivory panels. Two modern hinges hold the panels together, allowing them to fold closed like a book and lock by means of a hook and eye latch on their outer rims

One of Correggio’s most significant early works, this altarpiece was painted for a church in the artist’s hometown (from whence his name derives) to the east of Parma. It was commissioned by a local patron, Melchior Fassi, and hung in his chapel in the hospital church of Santa Maria Verberator, usually known as Santa Maria della Misericordia, until 1690

This beautiful and moving picture was acquired in 1908 by one of Bellini’s most eloquent admirers, the great British critic Roger Fry (1866–1934), who was employed by the Museum at the time (see Fry 1908)

During that decade Bronzino was often engaged in painting members of a close-knit circle of acquaintances with whom he shared literary interests, and this sitter—who so conspicuously holds open a book—may be from among that group
