Die deutsche eROSITA-Kollaboration veröffentlich den ersten Satz von Daten, die mit dem eROSITA-Röntgenteleskop an Bord des SRG-Observatoriums aufgenommen wurden, wie die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auf der diesjährigen Konferenz der Europäischen Astronomischen Gesellschaft bekannt gaben. Zum ersten Mal werden Astronominnen und Astronomen auf der ganzen Welt die Möglichkeit haben, Daten dieses neuen leistungsstarken Teleskops herunterzuladen und zu analysieren. Gleichzeitig mit dem sogenannten „Early Data Release“ erscheinen 35 eROSITA-Veröffentlichungen durch das deutsche eROSITA-Konsortium bereits vorab auf der Plattform arXiv. Diese und weitere Beiträge werden in einer kommenden Sonderausgabe der Zeitschrift „Astronomy and Astrophysics“ veröffentlicht.

Hans Zacher was born in Erlach am Inn, Lower Bavaria, in 1928, the son of a village schoolteacher. „The village we lived in was small and impoverished,“ he says. Yet his house was a little treasure trove full of books. Very austere conditions but an appreciation of education and culture: „a wonderful foundation upon which to grow“. The nearest „little town with any sign of an urban culture“ lay on the opposite bank of the Inn, in Austria: Braunau. The nearest city was Passau, 60 kilometres away. „My early childhood had nothing to do with law,“ he would later write in an autobiographical draft. „Social norms, religious standards, customs and constraints“ – but not law.

As announced during the 2021 meeting of the European Astronomical Society, the German eROSITA collaboration will release the first set of data taken with the eROSITA X-ray telescope onboard the SRG observatory. For the first time, astronomers throughout the world will have the chance to download and analyse data from this new powerful telescope. The Early Data Release will be accompanied by the publication of 35 eROSITA science papers by the German eROSITA Consortium on the arXiv preprint server, with these and more to be published in a forthcoming special issue of the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Ralf Poscher, Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung von Kriminalität, Sicherheit und Recht in Freiburg, erforscht rechtliche Aspekte der Polizeiarbeit. The police forces currently find themselves in the focus of public debate. This was triggered partly by the attacks on police officers in Stuttgart by rioting youths. For another part, police violence against blacks in the USA has also brought up the issue of racism in police work in Germany. Ralf Poscher, Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law is investigating legal aspects of police work. In this interview he talks about the different police cultures in the USA and Germany, about violence and de-escalation and possibilities to prevent discrimination.
