New York, 12 November Dearest Annerl! Shortly after I wrote my last letter to you, Heinzl collapsed and almost died. He was in hospital for two weeks but he’s strong enough now to go back to the office and back to work. He was so incredibly brave. When I took him to hospital that night he was virtually in a coma with a high fever. The doctor said he couldn’t be absolutely certain that he’d make it through the night. And Heinzl sensed that. The following morning, as he lay there in bed, yellow and gaunt and pale, he laughed …
It wasn’t too bad, I thought.

New York, 9 October My dearest Annerl! Guess who’s just arrived, fresh from Europe, virtually fresh from our place!? The telephone rings last night; Heinzl goes over, incomprehensible English; he calls me over, incomprehensible German; finally in French: Pommerance! À demain matin, dix heures, American Express Company! So that’s where I’ve been this morning: greeting the beaming schoolboy with a hearty handshake – or should I say greeting the young rascal? For the only schoolboys who are ever this excited and enthusiastic, curious and carefree, so entirely in their element, are either young rascals or schoolboys on holiday. From the …

14 February 1933 Annerl! When I put this new tracksuit on it fills me with more warmth than the fabric itself could possibly contain. Must I speak through Clifford and Ellen? Somehow I want to communicate in a less intellectual way. After all, Ellen was Peter’s wife, and the symbol of her name is a diversion that sometimes tries my patience, because for me at least the diversion is unnecessary and makes me feel as though there were a glass wall between me and the palpable, living reality. The warmth of the tracksuit reminds me of the English Gardens, the …

New York, 4 December 1932 My dearest Annerl! Today I spent a lot of time thinking about how to make our Spanish trip a reality. The hope of taking such a long and unhurried journey through Spain with you is so enticing that I will do everything in my power to make it happen in the spring if at all possible. For the time being I’m working hard, writing more novellas for publication, then I want to start learning Spanish (the Berlitz way), and I’m going to buy myself various books about Spanish history and geography and art. Then, as …
