World Education Indicators wurde 1997 wurde auf Einladung von UNESCO und OECD als Pilotprojekt in einer kleinen Gruppe von Ländern eingeführt. Das Hauptziel des Projekts war die Entwicklung einer kritischen Masse von bildungspolitisch relevanten Bildungsindikatoren, die geeignet sind, in international gültiger, zeitgemäßer und effizienter Weise den Zustand eines Bildungssystems zu evaluieren.- Wenn man auf der Eingangsseite einen der folgenden fünf Bereiche der Bildungspolitik auswählt, wird auf dem Bildschirm eine Liste von Indikatoren angezeigt, die zu diesem Bereich gehört: Zugang zum Schulwesen; Bildungsbeteiligung; interne Effizienz der Primarbildung; Indikatoren zu Ressourcen und Alphabetisierungsrate.
