A single strain of plague bacteria sparked multiple historical and modern pandemics. This was revealed by the analysis of three reconstructed historical genomes from Yersinia pestis, isolated from plague victims between the 14th and 16th century. The close relationship between strains causing different outbreaks in Europe led the international research team headed by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History to suggest Europe as a medieval plague hotspot. The researchers‘ study was just published in Cell Host & Microbe.

The European Union is currently experiencing several crises. Brexit is only one of them and probably not even the most serious one. Max Planck researchers are almost more concerned about the diverging views of the rule of law and the massive structural inequalities between the EU members. A look at the history of the international community, however, also shows that Europe has mastered many serious crises in the past – from which we can gain insights into the current situation.

Three 16th century skeletons from a mass burial in Mexico City highlight the role of the transatlantic slave trade in introducing and disseminating new pathogens to the Americas. Researchers from Germany and Mexico analyzed skeletal features, genetic data and isotopes to explore the life history of three enslaved Africans and explore the wide-ranging impacts of massive forced migration.
