Die UNESCO-Welterbestätte Oldupai-Schlucht im Norden Tansanias ist als „Wiege der Menschheit“, bekannt. Neue interdisziplinäre Feldforschung führte nun zur Entdeckung der bislang ältesten archäologischen Stätte in der Schlucht. Frühe Menschen nutzten dort über einen Zeitraum von 200.000 Jahren vielfältige Lebensräume, die immer wieder ökologischen Veränderungen unterworfen waren.

However, competition for global leadership in science and research on the one hand and critical domestic political developments in important partner countries on the other pose challenges to successful cooperations. In March 2021, the Max Planck Senate issued guidelines to support researchers in cooperating internationally – even under uncertain and difficult conditions.

Bettina Lotsch, director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, receives the Leibniz Prize 2025. She is honoured for her development of new materials. The Leibniz Prize, awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is Germany’s most prestigious research funding award, accompanied by prize money of 2.5 million euros. This year, the prize will honour 10 scientists, including four women, granting them seven years of research freedom with minimal bureaucratic constraints. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 15 March 2023 in Berlin.
